Empowering Your Cash-Based Practice: Breaking the Guilt Cycle
Let’s talk about a topic that might hit home for many healthcare professionals: the guilt that often comes along when considering a shift to a cash-based practice. If you've ever felt like you're somehow doing something wrong by aiming for this path, let me tell you, you're not alone. The truth is, the negative comments you might have come across from others are often based on misunderstandings and a lack of insight into your true intentions.
Many of us dream of transitioning to cash-based practices not because we're money-hungry, but because we genuinely believe it's a way to provide care the way we feel is best for us and our patients. The current insurance system can sometimes limit the quality and time we can dedicate to our patients. Venturing into cash-based practices can be an effective way of breaking free from these constraints and creating a healthcare experience that revolves around the patient's needs.
But still, the guilt can sneak in, driven by worries that cash-based practices only cater to the rich. That's far from reality. In fact, many patients seek out-of-network services when they can't access specialized care within their insurance network. The beauty of owning a cash-based practice is in the freedom it provides. You can implement policies like sliding scales and pro bono work into your practice model as long as it is clear to all patients who qualifies. You can also make a substantial positive impact by channeling some of your profits into charitable donations for various nonprofit organizations through your business. You may have caught my recent IG post about a Gala I was invited to because Rooted donated this year to Cancer Support Community which offers free therapy, yoga, and education to cancer survivors (a cause near and dear to me).
It's crucial to grasp that transitioning to a cash-based practice isn't just about making more money. It's about empowering yourself to offer the best possible care to your patients while retaining the flexibility to give back to your community.
The next time you wrestle with guilt about embracing a cash-based model, remember that your intentions are honorable and your practice can be a force for good in multiple ways. You're don’t have to be constrained by the system; you can step out of it to provide your best care and make a difference if that’s what you choose. There is room for all pay models.
