My PMHNP Private Practice Startup Timeline

Today, let’s break down my private practice startup timeline. I’ll be sharing some personal experiences and insights along the way!

Let's rewind to the early days, back when I first entertained the idea of starting my own private practice. I was knee-deep in my work at the hospital, navigating the complexities of consult liaison psychiatry in pediatrics. The thought of branching out on my own was both exciting and really intimidating. Probably like many of you, I sometimes struggled with self-doubt and questioned whether entrepreneurship was something I could actually pull off and maintain.

Spoiler alert: It absolutely was, (and it's in yours too).

Fast forward to January 2021, in the midst of a global pandemic, I took the leap and filed for incorporation. Despite the uncertainty of the time, I was determined to make it work. By May of the same year, I was officially incorporated and laying the groundwork for what would soon become my private practice.

Come May 2021, it was go time. By then I was working a part-time job so that I could really put my all into the launch of my practice. I put out my marketing materials, set up my website and EMR, and waited for the arrival of my first patients. It wasn't until July 13th that I saw my first patient. In those early days, I only had a handful of patients each month, but with each passing month, that number grew steadily. By the three-month mark, I broke even, and by the sixth month, I was turning a profit and welcoming more patients through my doors.

Now, let's talk about that magical moment when it all clicked—the one-year mark. At this point, I had built a panel of 60 to 75 patients (I can’t remember now the exact number!), a mix of psychotherapy and medication management. I had found my rhythm, my practice was thriving, and I was enjoying a stable, predictable income each month.

And here's the crazy part: I did all of my start-up without a mentor. Nothing like Strong Roots mentorship program existed yet to my knowledge so I figured it out through time-consuming trial and error. So, if you're considering mentorship to kickstart your own journey, just imagine how much faster your timeline could be!

Remember, every journey is unique and there will be ups and downs along the way. Here's to taking that first step, embracing the challenges, and carving out your own path to success!
